Espinosa made history as the 73rd president of the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, as the fourth woman and first ever representative from Latin America and the Caribbean to hold this position.

With over thirty years of experience in international negotiations, security, defence, and peacebuilding, Espinosa has firmly established herself as a respected global leader.
With extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy and international political affairs, Ms. Espinosa served as a policy advisor for the UICN (1999-2005), later as regional director (2005-2007), then as minister of foreign affairs, trade, and integration (2007-2008 and 2017-2018), ambassador and permanent representative of Ecuador to the United Nations in New York (2008-2009) and Geneva (2014-2017), and as President of the United Nations General Assembly (2018-2019).

Espinosa has led with pragmatism, versatility, and a commitment to effective multilateralism, qualities that would later define her presidency of the United Nations General Assembly.

Espinosa has also served as
the regional director at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, drawing on her academic expertise in climate security.
